Clean & Green Sustainable Smiles...

We are almost at the end of our #plasticfreejuly journey. We’ve switched to stainless steel straws, canvas bags and more. Now it’s time to think about our teeth... Every year up to 500 Million plastic toothbrushes are thrown away worldwide and end up in our oceans, sensitive ecosystems or sat in landfill indefinitely. It takes upwards of 400 years for plastic toothbrushes to decompose. If we adhere to manufacturers recommendations and replace our toothbrushes every 3 months, 1 individual could throw away around 300 toothbrushes in their lifetime.

Thankfully there is an alternative! Yet again, bamboo comes to the rescue. Bamboo grows up to two feet a day and being a grass it’s 100% biodegradable and compostable, making it the most sustainable, eco-friendly and cost effective option. And when it is time to replace your toothbrush, the bristles can be recycled and the rest popped in with your garden waste to be composted. Which, by the way, only take about 6 months to compost! A stark contrast to the 400 years for a plastic one. What’s not to love? 📷 Bamboo toothbrushes come in child and adult sizes and companies like ‘Truthbrush’ paint their handles different colours so you can tell them apart. A bamboo toothbrush will set you back up to about £4.50 but some online companies allow you to buy in bulk or to sign up to a subscription service which can be a more affordable option. I buy my bamboo toothbrushes from my local zero waste shop #cleartosea Who also stock a variety of other plastic free alternatives for teeth cleaning. (See photos) It’s not just the brush that comes with unnecessary plastic. Toothpaste and dental floss also have a lot to answer for. Toothpaste can be bought in jars or in powder or ‘tooth-tab’ form sold in tins. Silk dental floss is an alternative to nylon or there are vegan friendly options made from things like charcoal. All of which are 100% compostable. I have also recently seen advertised, eco-friendly chewing gum because, and this was news to me, regular chewing gum has plastic in it! If you can’t get to your local zero waste shop, why not head along to Boobalou (link in comments) and grab yourself a last minute 10% off with code JULY (only until the end of tomorrow)

Now your smile can be minty clean and 📷green📷
