We are almost at the end of our #plasticfreejuly journey. We’ve switched to stainless steel straws, canvas bags and more. Now it’s time to think about our teeth... Every year up to 500 Million plastic toothbrushes are thrown away worldwide and end up in our oceans, sensitive ecosystems or sat in landfill indefinitely. It takes upwards of 400 years for plastic toothbrushes to decompose. If we adhere to manufacturers recommendations and replace our toothbrushes every 3 months, 1 individual could throw away around 300 toothbrushes in their lifetime.
Thankfully there is an alternative! Yet again, bamboo comes to the rescue. Bamboo grows up to two feet a day and being a grass it’s 100% biodegradable and compostable, making it the most sustainable, eco-friendly and cost effective option. And when it is time to replace your toothbrush, the bristles can be recycled and the rest popped in with your garden waste to be composted. Which, by the way, only take about 6 months to compost! A stark contrast to the 400 years for a plastic one. What’s not to love?
